Diabetes, COPD, heart disease, cancer history, smoking — these conditions affect which carrier is right for you, not whether you can get covered. Most seniors with pre-existing conditions qualify for level benefit burial insurance with no waiting period. The critical factor is carrier selection.
When seniors with health conditions search for burial insurance, most make the same mistake: they apply to the carrier they saw on television, get placed in graded benefit or denied, and assume that’s the best they can do. It almost never is.
Final expense insurance underwriting varies enormously by carrier. A condition that triggers an automatic graded benefit placement at one carrier may qualify for full level benefit at another. A condition that results in a decline at five carriers may be specifically accepted by a sixth. The difference between the right carrier and the wrong one is not marginal — for a diabetic senior, it can mean $30–$60 per month more, a 2-year waiting period, and reduced coverage.
What “level benefit” means: Full death benefit paid from day one, regardless of cause of death. No waiting period. A “graded benefit” policy pays only a percentage of the death benefit (typically 30–100%) if death occurs in the first 2 years from natural causes. Level benefit is always better when you can qualify for it.
I placed clients with every health condition listed on this page. In almost every case, the person calling me had already been placed in a graded benefit policy or told their condition made level benefit impossible. Usually it wasn’t true. The condition mattered less than the carrier. Tell me your conditions and I’ll tell you honestly which carrier fits: (754) 800-1152.
This table shows how the major independent broker carriers handle the most common senior health conditions. Level benefit = full coverage from day one. Graded = 2-year waiting period. GI only = guaranteed issue only. Decline = not available.

This table is a guide, not a guarantee. Actual underwriting decisions depend on the full picture: specific medications, timing since treatment, presence of complications, and combination of conditions. A broker who knows these guidelines in detail — and reviews your complete profile before any application is submitted — is the only way to know for certain which tier you qualify for.
